Thanks Smitty, found it. Bring Materials handed things over from wherever you were standing, and tapping near a castle opens its menu instead of walking you in, so on something that big you could never get close enough.
In the next update it walks you to the site first, then hands the materials over. Same fix for the kingdom store at a finished castle (Give, Take, the Furnace and the levy): they walk you to the castle first too.
